Artist                              :     Charles LaBelle
Exhibition Period            :     Saturday  December 17,2011  at 5.00
Exhibition Venue            :     Number 1 Gallery, The Silom Galleria Bld., Bangkok.

Number 1 Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Charles LaBelle, with an ambitious architecturally inspired drawing installation by American artist Charles LaBelle.

Begun fourteen years ago, Buildings Entered is an ongoing, lifetime project in which LaBelle documents every building he physically enters.  Currently, there are over thirteen thousand buildings in the archive, with additional buildings being added almost daily.  Conceptual in nature, the project is both a diary and a historical document in which the artist’s own life and the space of the world intersect.

Recorded photographically, with the photos themselves never exhibited, LaBelle selects certain buildings to render in watercolor pencil atop gesso painted pages torn from a relevant theoretical tome.  These public drawings are incidental to the individual physical and philosophical encounter between the artist and the penetrated space, be it a famous landmark or a conspicuous 7-11. Asides from obvious profiles to specific urban geographies, indicative architectural nuances, and concurrent cultural characteristics, LaBelle’s art reflects personal behaviour patterns, as well as approaches to process, time-based, and performance art.

OTAKU
by Charinthorn  Rachurutchata

Exhibition                       :     OTAKU
Artist                              :     Charinthorn  Rachurutchata
Exhibition Period            :     Saturday  November 12,2011  at 5.00
Exhibition Venue            :     Number 1 Gallery, The Silom Galleria Bld., Bangkok.

Number 1 Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Otaku, with new photography and video works by Charinthorn Rachurutchata. In only her second solo exhibition, Charinthorn reflects upon the cult phenomenon of Cosplay, the costumed character role-playing derived from Manga and anime. Initially trained as a fashion photographer, Charinthorn’s elaborate photo constructions adopt the aesthetics of anime as well as the Christian symbolism superficially appropriated by Japanese cartoon and animation creators.

Burgeoning into a global cultural trend that has permeated Thai youth culture, Charinthorn previously ran a specialised Manga comic book store in downtown Bangkok.  A self-confessed otaku, meaning nerd or geek, she is an occasional participant in this fantasy-obsessed community of illusory alter egos. Her embedded positioning offers a unique artistic perspective that explores aspects of self-realisation and belonging, fetishism and adoration, lifestyle branding and cultural imperialism.
A BA graduate from Sukhothai University, 29-year-old Charinthorn Rachurutchata began her career as a photographer for Cheeze magazine. She held her debut solo exhibition Bubble (2010) at RMA Institute in Bangkok, and has also participated in the group exhibitions Within These Walls (2010), at the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre (BACC), and Up to You (2011) at Bangkok’s Dungderm Hotel. Her latest short film, Shanghai Mansion (2011), was commissioned by the Hot Short Film programme to air on Thai PBS.

Already Mades
by Krit Ngamsom

Opening reception    :   17  September 2011
Exhibition Period       :   September 17 -  October 31 ,2011
Exhibition Venue        :   Number 1 Gallery, The Silom Galleria Bld., Bangkok.

Number 1 Gallery is pleased to announce the art exhibition Already Mades with new three-dimensional works by Krit Ngamsom. Marking his third solo exhibition, the whimsical installation features a new series of mixed media sculptures that appropriate and re-contextualise significant creations in 20th century art. Looking to such artistic heavyweights as Salvador Dali, Marcel Duchamp, Nam June Paik, Jeff Koons, and Damien Hirst, Krit fancifully reinterprets iconic art objects.

Having only ever viewed such masterpieces as Duchamp’s Dada Fountain (1917) or Dali’s surrealist Lobster telephone (1936) as reproductions within the pages of arts publications, Krit considers artworks he has yet to physically experience through inspirational realisations from his own imagination.

Manifested as carnivalesque post-modern parodies, Krit customs an art amuseument park in which the historical significance of such pivotal artworks is celebrated and subverted. Krit’s artistic shanzhai also has implications to authenticity, commodity, and the role of art as entertainment.

Hailing from Phichit province in Thailand’s north, in 2008 Krit graduated with a MA in Visual Art from King Mongkut Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. Known for creating engaging kinetic artworks that combine everyday objects, the 28-year-old artist has participated in the group exhibitions Bangkok Bananas at Central World (2009), Bangkok 226 and Traces of Siamese Smile at the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre (both 2008), as well as the 2010 solo exhibition Sparkle at Thavibu Gallery.

Oceanic Wilderness
by Kriangkrai Kongkhanun

Exhibition Period               :     May 24, - May 29, 2011
Exhibition Venue               :     Booth 3C12,Hongkong International Art Fair  2011

Number1Gallery proudly presents  “Oceanic Wilderness ” by Kriangkrai Kongkhanun and this is very special Exhibition. The Exhibition will be displayed  at Hong Kong International Art Fair2011.

A vast expanse of the planet’s surface, the world’s oceans are one of the last unexplored territories for man to unfurl and inevitably exploit. Since ancient times, the great blue seas have stirred the depths of the human imagination, invoking myths of the monstrous creatures like the Kraken, or more seductive mermaids and sirens. In Thailand’s rich spiritual and animistic iconography, the water dwelling Naga serpents are powerful protective deities.

A magnet for tourists, the foreboding reality of Thailand’s coastal waters is one of over fishing and increasing pollution from manmade detritus. Netted by negligent fisherman, the Irrawaddy dolphin is close to extinction and the graceful turtle fares little better in a bleak forecast for Asia’s aquatic species.

Facade
by Jirasak Plaboothong, Chalermpon Ratanakomonwat, Karuna Panumes

Artist                                      : Jirasak Plaboothong, Chalermpon Ratanakomonwat, Karuna Panumes
Opening reception                : Thursday, May 19th 2011
Exhibition Period                  : May 19th, - June 18th, 2011
Exhibition Venue                  : Number 1 Gallery, The Silom Galleria Bld., Bangkok.

Number1Gallery proudly presents  “Facade” , by  three of Number 1 Gallery’s most talented painters In Facade, painters are brought together for the shared capability of their portraiture. Each artist utilises their own idiosyncratic facial representations as metaphors for personal psychologies, with implications to broader societal referencing and the consequences of man’s self-serving actions.

he scratched, layered patina of Jirasak Plaboothong’s intense facial studies imbue the archaic, suggesting a collectivised knowledge of man through the ages, but that such wisdom should be weighed carefully.           Trapped within self-indulgent recesses of the mind, Chalermpon Ratanakomonwat’s twisted studies paint a tormented picture of inner anguish, indicating the destructive nature of delusional obsessions.

theatrical penumbra of light and shadow, the superficial tranquility of female painter Karuna Panumes’ deceptively seductive self-portraits, are suggestive of inner darkness and the elusive attainment of spiritual calm.         Within the historical context of portrait painting and against a growing proliferation of digitised facial imaging propounded through social media, the three artists manifest highly individual self-expressions to ponder the complexities facing Thai society at this pivotal juncture.

                                             10   am. -  6 pm.
Exhibition Venue                   Number 1 Gallery, The Silom Galleria Bld., Bangkok.

In Femme Fatale, Chakaphan centres his fantastical narratives upon the female figure as his metaphoric subject. Portrayed as beautiful temptresses, his seductive muses are deceptive illusions to reality, their vulnerability and fallibility symbolic to life’s falsities.

Incorporating music as a further analogy, the high and low pitches of a score mirroring the journey through life, he considers that from infant to parenthood, existence is intangible and transitory with external forces dictating destiny.

Previously Chakaphan directed his brush toward the transgender community, exploring notions inner truth. An MFA graduate from Silpakorn University, Chakaphan’s painterly style is evocative to several of the great canonical artists from Western art history.

ExhibitionPeriod:
     January 28 -  February 20, Monday - Saturday10am -  6 pm.
Venue:
Number 1 Gallery, The Silom Galleria Bld., Bangkok.

For his third solo exhibition artist Wutigorn Kongka, a lecturer at King Mongkut Institute of Technology Latkrabang (KMITL), presents his latest series of statuesque acrylic canvases that are testament to the continuing vitality of painting as a medium.
In Naked, Wutigorn strips bare the veil of the modern human condition into a fanciful composite construct of our primal physical and psychological preoccupations. Now in his forties, a more contemplative and content artist unravels the subconscious lucidity of dreams, discovering romantic notions to gender relationships, sexual chemistry, power and control.
Drawing inspiration from the physiology of human iconographic representations, Wutigorn finds aesthetic commonality in ancient Greco-Roman statuary and antique Khmer sculpture, as well as more contemporary associations to Damien Hirst’s anatomical giant, and Lucien Freud’s painterly figuration.

Longing for Siam, Inventing Thailand,
by Sutee Kunavichayanont

December 16, 2010 -  January 15, 2011.
AT NUMBER1GALLERY

Number1Gallery proudly presents Longing for Siam, Inventing Thailand, by Sutee Kunavichayanont   an exhibition of contemporary art that yearns for a past when Thailand, her borders constantly shifting and indeed sometimes contracting even as she sought territorial expansion, was on the brink of becoming a powerful nation.

Sutee Kunavichayanont is a leading Thai artist who first came to prominence in 1998 with his elephant, buffalo and tiger-shaped breath donation sculptures crafted from rubber. A second seminal series, History Class, was begun in 2000. Interactive, the series, appearing in several forms from the turn of the century, is composed of re-appropriated children’s wooden school desks that the artist has engraved with scenes illustrating Siamese/Thai history. Extending an invitation to all viewers to make rubbings from the engraved surfaces of the desks, Sutee is in fact giving his audience the opportunity to produce their own Thai political history text books.

Sutee had participated in several significant international art events such as 1st Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Arts (1999) in the United Kingdom, and the 5th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane, Australia (2006). His works are in the collections of prominent art museums and galleries worldwide including the Mori Art Museum, Japan, The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan, the Singapore Art Museum, Singapore, and the Queensland Art Gallery, Australia. In 2006, Sutee received a prestigious Manas Siensing Red Award 2 from the Pridi Banomyong Institute for his outstanding artistic creations and art related contributions.

DELUSION
by  Ratthaphoom Pewpantamit.

The world is moving ahead ,but the human passion is darkened. Confronts the idea that if we look back at the past, everything is changed unexpectedly. Obviously, it is because of the gap of the moral standard of Buddhism in Thailand. The Picture of  “Lost” come from the idea that nowaday people are materialism ,and that’s make them depress if they could not get what they want.

Number 1 Gallery invites you to be a part of opening the exhibition “ Lost “ by Ratthaphoom Pewpantamit. On  Wednesday of 11 November – 6 December 2009. At The number 1 Gallery, Room B26-27 , B1 Floor, Silom Galleria Building.  Exhibition opening hour are Monday – Saturdays 10.00 – 19.00 and Sundays 11.00 – 18.00

KWAN
by  Teerawat  Kanama.

While we are finding the way to have a happy living, we should not forget the core of Living. Since we still believe that Living is not just BREATHING under control of the complete heart function, we are BREATHING under our mind’s order.

That is the explanation of “Kwan” by Teerawat Kanama. It is Thai tradition, in the village all of villagers come together at least once in a year to raise their mind power. To raise the mind force is to gather the good feeling and good thoughts. When good mind, good feeling and good thinking blended together, Mind Power becomes more strengthened. In Thai we know “Kwan” as our Mind Power.

“Kwan,” our Mind Power builds us the happy and smooth life.

In the past and present social, female’s beauty and charm is attractive and also take them to danger that’s around them. Nowadays, we can see the social without moral and merit of human-being. So, man has behavior like the bestiality that hides in human-being and come to harm, hurt and attack the weaker. So, I need to reflect to the badness of the present society and finally realize to the worst of human-being that is “subconscious”.
Waiyawut  Promrat
The present situations are major aspects in my creation. I would like to show the strangeness of creatures’ behavior. They have more instinct to get them to survive and there is no direction in their     lives. Everything has changed according to the terrible situations that humans have made unconsciously. Finally, everything relates to each other and if one thing happens; we all have to responsible for it
Chainarong Kongkink
Change of life is a important thing to create my
painting by means of reflection of my attitudes that show
negligence of human living at the present which  consequences by civilization that makes the circumstance outside influences the internality. This causes the new unbalanced creatures. It is also a direct result to human life. So, for being survive, man has to adapt himself into these endlessly-changed environment.

IN PRAISE OF THE CULTURED MAN
by
Alongkorn Lauwatthana

The conceive of self, sex, class, status, image or physical appearance are apparent to visual perception; yet, the lucidity becomes obscured and unclear; the reality is distorted and finally decays…

In the mean time, there is something co-conceived; the act of virtue freed from the frame of appearance becomes the true demonstration of the core essence of a ‘civilized individual’, truthfully and inarguably.

THE MORAL PRECEPT
by
Chatchawan Rodklongtan

The works represent the working style of contemporary Thai painting, yet still uphold the Thai uniqueness. By combining the artist's personal thoughts and imagination to the depiction of dharma conundrums, we can see the works portray something more than the familiar style of work concerning the life of the Buddha or architecture. Through his works, we can witness the artist's faith for Buddhism, the representation of the path to core meaning of life, the fact of life—the birth, the living and the eventual ending of every being.

The 2 Destinations lead us to the The Destination of happiness, the way of happiness could be seen in his works.
