RATTANA KHUNKAEW
Rattana Khunkaew received his
B.F.A. in Thai Art from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts,
Silpakorn University, in 2012. His early practice was recognised with an
outstanding award from the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Ministry of
Culture.
Working primarily with acrylic and
collage on canvas, Rattana constructs richly detailed narrative scenes
populated by monkeys and anthropomorphic figures. Drawing on Thai literature,
popular television dramas, social rituals, and everyday behaviour, he combines
traditional visual references with contemporary culture to examine ambition,
social hierarchy, desire, belief, and the roles individuals perform before
others.
In Monkey Show, presented at
Number 1 Gallery in 2015, the spectacle of trained monkeys became a metaphor
for human beings shaped by social expectations and concealed desires. The
Monkey’s Wedding, his
second solo exhibition with the gallery in 2017, extended this language into
the rituals surrounding marriage, revealing the many participants, beliefs, and
social pressures concealed behind a seemingly private union. Through humour,
theatrical composition, and visual excess, his paintings transform familiar
cultural narratives into pointed observations of contemporary Thai society.

รัตนะ ขุนแก้ว
รัตนะ ขุนแก้ว สำเร็จการศึกษาศิลปบัณฑิต สาขาศิลปไทย จากคณะจิตรกรรม ประติมากรรมและภาพพิมพ์ มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2555 ผลงานในช่วงเริ่มต้นของเขาได้รับรางวัลยอดเยี่ยมจากสำนักงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัย กระทรวงวัฒนธรรม
รัตนะสร้างสรรค์จิตรกรรมสีอะคริลิกและภาพปะติดบนผ้าใบ โดยประกอบสร้างฉากเล่าเรื่องที่เต็มไปด้วยลิงและตัวละครกึ่งมนุษย์ เขานำวรรณคดีไทย ละครโทรทัศน์ วัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัย พิธีกรรมทางสังคม และพฤติกรรมในชีวิตประจำวันมาผสมผสานกับภาษาภาพแบบไทย เพื่อสำรวจความทะเยอทะยาน ลำดับชั้นทางสังคม ความปรารถนา ความเชื่อ และบทบาทที่มนุษย์แสดงต่อหน้าผู้อื่น
ในนิทรรศการ Monkey Show ซึ่งจัดแสดงที่ Number 1
Gallery เมื่อปี พ.ศ.
2558 การแสดงของลิงที่ผ่านการฝึกฝนถูกใช้เป็นอุปมาถึงมนุษย์ซึ่งถูกกำหนดและขัดเกลาโดยความคาดหวังของสังคม ต่อมา The Monkey’s Wedding นิทรรศการเดี่ยวครั้งที่สองกับแกลเลอรีในปี พ.ศ.
2560 ได้ขยายภาษาดังกล่าวไปสู่พิธีกรรมการแต่งงาน เผยให้เห็นผู้คน ความเชื่อ และแรงกดดันทางสังคมที่ซ่อนอยู่เบื้องหลังความสัมพันธ์ส่วนบุคคล ผลงานของเขาใช้ทั้งอารมณ์ขัน องค์ประกอบคล้ายฉากละคร และรายละเอียดที่หนาแน่น เพื่อเปลี่ยนเรื่องราวซึ่งผู้ชมคุ้นเคยให้กลายเป็นข้อสังเกตต่อสังคมไทยร่วมสมัย
